5. Share Your Story

Sharing stories paves the way for empathy, but only if we share our stories with the heart of an others-focused leader.


Step 1. Ask yourself: Who am I sharing this story for? Am I sharing it to make myself look good or to benefit someone else? When we get into groups of friends and start exchanging those "remember when?" stories, it's easy to want to share a story for ourselves. As a leader, you should want to try and do the opposite: Share for the other person, and be okay if you don't even get to finish your entire story, because it turned into a back and forth dialogue instead!

Step 2. Share with humility. Share a story to benefit the other person even if it doesn't always show you in the most favorable light. Your vulnerability will open the door for them to grow and take away more impactful insights from your conversation.

Step 3. Share while listening to the other person. Observe his or her body language and other non-verbal cue that can let you know if what you are saying is resonating and helpful.


Next time you find yourself in a group conversation --- whether catching up with friends or meeting with coworkers --- asking yourself this simple question will help your stories resonate in a much more meaningful way!
