Get to know your audience before the presentation.

Whenever possible, try to establish a rapport with them before the presentation begins. Actually talk with them!  If in person, show up early. During the breaks, meet people and talk with them. Ask questions about what they do, why they are there and what they are hoping to receive from the event.
