We are fascinated with the topic of vocation—of trying to align the gifts and interests that we have with the needs of our communities and the world. Parker Palmer says that “Vocation does not come from willfulness. It comes from listening. I must listen to my life and try to understand what it is truly about – quite apart from what I would like it to be about – or my life will never represent anything real in the world, no matter how earnest my intentions.” This reminds us of the way that Maria Montessori talks about helping children find their “cosmic tasks” in the world. Yet, in our systems and in our daily lives we rarely have time to deeply reflect on our role in the world’s unfolding. Today, we are pausing to talk about it!
