To a point, it is in our nature to be possessive. In fact, behaving possessively has been a rather effective tactic through our evolutionary history for keeping partners from straying, and for preventing competitors from ‘poaching our mates.’
But in our modern society, there is no reason to put up with possessiveness. It is a negative character trait, a low-value marker, and needs to be addressed.
The real problem is when possessiveness causes people to overstep the boundaries of their agreements.
