Summary
Google has developed a new AI called MusicLM that can generate musical pieces from text prompts. The AI can even convert a hummed or whistled melody into other instruments. The company has uploaded several examples of the AI's musical creations on its website. MusicLM can create 30-second snippets of songs from paragraph-long descriptions of genre, vibe and specific instruments. It can also generate 5-minute pieces from one or two words such as "melodic techno." The AI can even simulate human vocals. Google has published a research paper explaining how it achieved the results, but has no plans to release the model due to the risk of plagiarism and cultural appropriation or misrepresentation. However, Google is releasing a dataset of 5,500 music-text pairs that could help with training and evaluating other musical AIs.
Google held a press conference in Paris to showcase its new AI technologies, but it did not deliver the decisive move against ChatGPT and the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership that was expected by many. The presentation included a demo of "multisearch", an AI-powered visual search feature of Google Lens, "Immersive View" feature of Google Maps, and a new version of Google Translate. However, the demo was overshadowed by a missing phone during the presentation. On Monday, two days before the conference, Google announced Bard, a conversational AI model to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's "New Bing." During the conference, Prabhakar Raghavan and Liz Reid went over Bard's features, but revealed nothing new. Bard remains locked behind Google's doors as the company is still testing it. Despite Google's slow move to market with a breakthrough generative AI product, the competition between the tech giants is not over yet, as there are issues with intellectual property and hallucinations in large language models.
Elon Musk's SpaceX had plans to launch a powerful new class of space vehicle called the starship but faced challenges due to harsh weather conditions and other issues. The rocket, which was showcased during a speech by Elon Musk, never made it to orbit. The rocket was relocated to a retired rocket cemetery on SpaceX's property after it was found to be unfit for flying due to damage from the harsh weather and other factors.
