2026 marks 50 years since 16 June 1976, when black pupils protested against the policy of imposing Afrikaans and English as sole languages of instruction in South African schools. What was meant to be a demonstration at the Department of Bantu Education in Booysens, Johannesburg by Soweto students ended in a deadly confrontation with the South African Police. Last week, the Wits School of Governance hosted a seminar that seeked to reflect on the 16 June 1976 moment, the legacy of youth activism, and its influence on the trajectory of South African history.
