5.06 Navigating your Cultural Identity in a Eurocentric PhD Field

Listen Later

In this episode, we chat to Jianing Li about her experiences of navigating her cultural identity as a Chinese woman in medieval studies, one of the most Eurocentric fields of study in the humanities. We dive deeper into what challenges she faces with university admin, struggles with systemic racism, the importance of supportive supervisors and mentors, and regaining your voice and claiming your space in a male-dominated, white space in academia.

About Jianing: Jianing has recently completed her PhD in medieval literature. She originally comes from China. Her research interests vary from medieval romance, to post-colonial history, to modern comics. Outside of her professional work, she’s a proud dog mum of a Corgi called Merlin.
