51. Self love: What does it mean to truly love ourselves?

Listen Later

In this episode I talk about Self Love, what it means to truly love ourselves, not in a superficial or surface level way that we often see on social media. I explore why self love is so important, and how we can start to open ourselves and our hearts up more to be more loving towards ourselves, and others.

I believe this is such an important conversation to be having and I hope to explore this more in the future, here on the podcast and through some of my offerings. To stay updated, you can sign up to my newsletter here.

Here are the words I shared in this episode:

To me, self love is the recognition and the remembering of our true nature. It is the realisation that we are worthy of unconditional love, exactly as we are. It is a forever journey, not somewhere we “get to”. And as we continue to grow, change and evolve, it will require us to love ourselves more deeply, every step of the way. Self love is not selfish. This is what they will try to have us believe, so we continue to search outside of ourselves for the love and validation we so desperately desire. It’s remembering that while it’s okay to want to better and improve ourselves - that’s human nature - self love is not something to be obtained, it’s already within us. True self love is the acceptance of ourselves right here and now. Our journey is to peel back all of the layers of conditioning that have tried to tell us otherwise, so that we can see the beauty and perfection of who we truly are, underneath it all.
And the words that came to me yesterday:
Can I love the parts of me that feel unlovable?
Can I be with the difficult emotions as they come up? Not avoid or suppress them, but really sit with them and trust that they will pass.
Can I let myself be imperfect? To be vulnerable. To be the unfiltered version of myself.
Can I allow myself to move at my own pace? To take my time and not be rushed by others’ timelines.
Can I allow myself to let go of control? To not be so attached to the outcome of where I invest my most precious resources: time, energy and attention.
Can I let go of what other people think of me? Knowing that what I think of me is most important.
