The Black Guardian, a cosmic being who once vowed revenge against the Doctor, contacts an alien schoolboy named Turlough and tasks him with killing the Doctor’s latest incarnation in return for sending him back to his home planet.

Meanwhile, a TARDIS malfunction leads to a run-in with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in two time periods (1977 & 1983) as well as a spaceship full of immortal mutants who want the Doctor to save them by giving up his remaining regenerations.
