Still manipulated by the demands of the Black Guardian, Turlough sabotages the TARDIS, causing it to anchor itself to the nearest spaceship. Once on board, they quickly join forces with a pair of fashion-forward space pirates and discover that the bulk of its occupants are terminally ill from a leprosy-like disease called Lazar and are being taken to the farthest reaches of space where they hope to be healed by an experimental procedure lead by a group of Hydromel addicted armored men and a giant dog headed creature called the Garm.

As Nyssa falls victim to the Lazar disease and forced through the experimental procedure, the Doctor realizes that a fuel leak in the ship could cause the destruction of the universe.
