LaVena Johnson chose to join the military after graduating high school, as a way to pay for her own education, and ease the burden off her parents. After basic training, she was deployed to Balad, Iraq, and within weeks of deployment, she reported that she had been raped. On July 19, 2005, 5 weeks into her deployment, she was found dead in what was allegedly a contractor’s tent.
