Tracey O'Connell, M.D. is an educator and a coach who primarily works with LGBTQ+ teens and families. She has been collaborating with Brene Brown's organization, Daring Way, and works as a Daring Way facilitator. The key components of these teachings are leading with courage, shame, vulnerability, authenticity, self-compassion, and resilience. These universal human themes provide a container for any mental health work, but are specifically useful for the LGBTQ community. 

In this episode, Tracey and I talk about how LGBTQ youth are often more "woke" and aware than non-marginalized youth. "They are the wisest, most trustworthy, and inclusive kids I have ever worked with", Tracey says, "They understand how curiosity over criticism is important for all humans to practice." Tracey and I share that when we talk to the youth, and in particular the LGBTQ youth, we feel more optimistic and hopeful about the future. Tracey explains how judging others ("othering") limits the richness of a full life experience. Rather, explore curiosity over criticism. 

Our conversation evolves into a discussion about suffering and how parents often sacrifice their own well-being when their children are in crisis. I share my personal story about the catalyst moment that allowed me to transform my suffering into pleasure, humor, and service. Tracey encourages us to remain open to new ideas and experiences and explains how so much of our suffering can be eased by curiosity and play.
