"Homeostasis is the ability that your body has to return to normal after an accident. Wounds heal, blood resumes flowing, illness passes. Self-regulation can be seen as a form of resilience, since it’s the emotional ability to return to equilibrium after a disruption. For individuals growing up under chronic stress or pervasive trauma, their ‘normal equilibrium’ is different from the average. They tend towards more disorganization and lack of emotional stability. It takes tremendous effort - psychologically and physiologically - to manage their lack of stability. In other words, their capacity for self-regulation is inhibited. We can presume this in turn decreases their resilience." ---Kathy Kain
