At the end of a meal, the waiter smoothly places a leather-bound check on the table and says “Take your time.” You open it casually, only to come face-to-face with a black line that reads “Tip.” Depending on who you are, you’ll either do mental math, open up your calculator, or hit them with your best guess. Chances are, when you’re tipping, you already know that it’s not just about generosity. Tips are loaded with social expectations and the fear of not being seen as stingy.
