Listen Later

Dr. Jen Thiess is a Professor of Communication at Rutgers University in the School of Communication and Information.

In this episode, I talked with Jen about her work on Relational Turbulence Theory and its impact on our understanding of romantic and other interpersonal relationships. The theory explains the kinds of challenges that arise during transition periods in relationships and how they affect communication. Expect to learn how to navigate turbulence in a relationship, the role of effective communication, how to take your partners perspective, the importance of listening, how relational uncertainty is one of the main mechanisms in creating turbulence, how turbulence affects, cognitive, emotional, and communicative processes, how transitions can also strengthen relationships and build resilience, how important it is to address turbulence, step back to gain perspective, and communicate effectively, how a relationship is a continuous investment and requires mindful and deliberate work to weather storms, and much more.
