It served you well, now wave goodbye and grow on!
-“Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons, every day of the week. This is message #56 and I am Aaron Havens. This message especially goes out to Zoi from North Carolina
Power Boom! That’s what we would call it.
When my daughter was first starting her volleyball career she started behind!
The girls she was playing with had been playing for years
AND my daughter was what we called “tiny but powerful”
I remember her coach saying it was time to start serving overhand, which is a big accomplishment in volleyball. Again, my daughter was tiny and this feat seemed nearly impossible. And it was. Hitting it underhand would guarantee the ball going high and over the net. Attempting overhead would look like a cartoon as a wobbly ball would just kinda somewhat go up in the air a tiny bit and move in the direction of the net with no hope of getting even remotely close to going over. In fact, it had a better change of hitting her teammates in the back of the head than it did of going over the net. Again, this serve was impossible for my “tiny but powerful” daughter…. Until it wasn’t.
I remember the first time she connected with the ball, hitting it overhand and it went over the net. Before her serve she bit her lip… oh I knew it was going to happen… she let it rip… and you know what? It didn’t just go over the net, it hit the back wall of the other side of the gym! It like she found the confidence and strength the figured out the mechanics of it all in one serve. From that point on, she never served underhand again. That underhand serve had served her well. Now it was time to wave and grow on! We called that serve a “power boom”. It was heard in gyms across the nation that day!
Power Boom became almost like a call to greatness with my daughter.
A verb. Go power boom that thing girl!!
My friends go Power Boom that thing today.
You’re underhand serve has gotten you to this point. Build off of those mechanics, have confidence in your next move, step up to the line, grab the ball and Power Boom that thing! You might feel tiny, but you are powerful! Having confidence in your serve will one day lead to a state championship. Do this thing, go for it, bite your lips and swing away!
