56 - Lament

John McPhee brings one of today's reflections from Kirkliston Parish Church, Scotland.

We live in a broken world that is suffering the consequences of human failure. – every newscast confirms it, and in our connected world we can’t escape the horrors of war and injustice. In the last few weeks within our church family, we have experienced tragedy too, and it makes us want to reach out in love to those who are at the centre of it.

The Bible has a thread of suffering and pain running through it, raw and bitter at times, as God’s people try to come to terms with their
distress. There are at least 50 Psalms of “Lament”, and God doesn’t seem to mind the questions, anger, and confusion.
Psalm 13 asks “How long…?” but ends with a decision to trust God in the fog of uncertainly – “But I will trust in your unfailing love.” In the absence of an answer to the question “Why?” that is the rock on which we need to plant our feet. We stand together with those who grieve and pray that as they mourn, they will still know the blessing of the Lord.
