Welcome back to Nuanced Beauty!
Sarah Carter is the author of "All About Change: How to Successfully Make Personal Life Changes." She is a fellow alum from the US Merchant Marine Academy. She commissioned in the Navy after college, flying the P3 and P8 aircrafts, and has since achieved her masters and accreditations to continue her professional career as a life coach. With 2024 JUST days away, I wanted to bring her on the show today to lean into the topic of New Years resolutions, change, and goal setting.
We discuss what led her to make the move from serving to becoming a life coach, and we get into the highs and lows of her job today.
Next, she gives us the meaning behind growth and fixed mindset. Yes, these words are commonly used today, but do you know about the initial study and researcher who coined the term?
I share my thoughts on fixed and growth mindset around health and fitness, and how I think we can find ourselves oscillating between the two, given such and such life circumstance or season.
I quote Sarah's book:
"No change ever stands alone, yours or the changes of those you can help (pg. 54)."
And we explore how someone might find encouragement by seeing the extent of how a given change can impact others around them. This could be the very motivation they need to proceed!
Finally, we dive into New Years Resolutions! Some folks love them and ritualistically reflect and set goals... while others cynically avoid them like the plague, and still others casually approach them with optimism, but are not surprised when their plans fizzle out by February.
Sarah's sage advice on setting or forgetting New Years Resolutions? Do it! Set a goal!
So we dive into the nuance of HOW to set a resolution, accomplishing said resolution, and reflecting on progress made. Let's not entirely re-invent the wheel and refer back to the good ol' "SMART goals" acronym: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. And truly, celebrate progress along the way (cue "SMART!").
Before closing, I ask Sarah for her top fiction and non-fiction read of 2023.
Non-Fiction --> Wave: A Memoir by Sonali Deraniyagala
Fiction --> The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
