“Na realidade de hoje, a maioria das famílias não armazena mais uma carpa viva na banheira antes dos feriados, nem passa o dia todo preparando alimentos que exigem mão-de-obra intensiva. Sob a bandeira da conveniência, as últimas décadas viram tradições alimentares preciosas enfiadas em potes e negligenciadas, incluindo gefiltefish.
O gefiltefish já foi uma forma inovadora de esticar até onde um peixe poderia ir para alimentar uma família, um poderoso símbolo do campesinato europeu. A variedade enlatada, por outro lado, é um lembrete pungente de quanto nos afastamos dos velhos tempos, tanto que gefiltefish se tornou sinônimo de desatualizado, cinza, antiquado e Velho Mundo.
Mas não precisamos aceitar a extinção desta tradição ou dos sabores robustos, coloridos e frescos da cozinha Ashkenazi. Sabemos que gefiltefish - como borscht e kvass e tantos outros alimentos do Velho Mundo - são excelentes quando feitos da maneira certa. Tudo se resume ao básico de qualidade, frescor, cuidado e criatividade.
Gefiltefish não é apenas sobre sua bubbe. Não se trata de kitsch ou de uma revolução gastronômica. [Nosso objetivo] é recuperar nossos alimentos consagrados pelo tempo e se preocupar com seu sabor e como são obtidos. É servir um prato com orgulho, não simplesmente por deferência a convenções vazias. Trata-se de levar as tradições alimentares a sério e recuperar a glória da comida Ashkenazi - o que ela foi e o que pode ser.”
Esse é o texto do “Manifesto Gefilte”, que abre o livro de mesmo título de autoria de Jeffrey Yoskowitz e Liz Alpern, no qual os autores buscam novas receitas para comidas judaicas do Velho Mundo.

O Brasil é um dos países mais conectados nas redes sociais. Segundo alguns estudos, cerca de 88% da população brasileira está conectada em pelo menos uma rede. E, como dá pra imaginar, isso se intensificou ainda mais com a pandemia em 2020, quando tivemos a necessidade de transformar vivências físicas em digitais com urgência. "Vinte e cinco anos atrás, como uma jovem ortodoxa, comecei com estas palavras um artigo que se tornou bastante influente: "Todas as coisas morrem e renascem continuamente". Eu estava errada. Às vezes, não podemos nos repetir. Nós podemos apenas nos transformar. No entanto, nossa responsabilidade moral por aquele eu anterior e seus atos perduram. Vinte e cinco anos depois, como teóloga reformista feminista, continuo diante de um ensaio que escrevi, um ensaio que continua a ser citado, mencionado e reproduzido, emitindo opiniões e prescrevendo ações que agora não posso em sã consciência endossar. Meu ensaio se chamava "Tum'á e Tahará: fins e começos". Tratava das antigas leis de pureza, cuja principal forma sobrevivente é o poderoso conjunto de leis e costumes relativos à menstruação feminina. Como essa legislação rege o comportamento e as atitudes sexuais e sociais de maneira tão difusa, pode-se dizer que a impureza menstrual é constitutiva da personalidade religiosa das mulheres no Judaísmo Ortodoxo. Eu me comprometi a justificar essa legislação construindo em torno dela uma teologia feminista da pureza.
Ao rever meu artigo, tive que me perguntar: Qual é a responsabilidade de uma teóloga quando ela não acredita mais no que ensinou aos outros como Torá? Simplesmente retratar-se é insuficiente, porque teólogos não são apenas teóricos. Eles exemplificam maneiras de viver os compromissos judaicos com integridade. O que devo àqueles que leram e foram persuadidos por minha teologia da pureza não é apenas delinear abstratamente minhas conclusões revisadas, mas contar uma história ricamente detalhada sobre um processo particular de ruptura e transformação em um tempo e lugar específicos."
Assim, Rachel Adler começa seu artigo In Your Blood Live: Re-Visions of a Theology of Purity, no qual revisitou o tema da pureza e impureza rituais e do uso da micve neste sentido depois de ter escrito sobre o assunto 25 anos antes. Ao longo deste período, Rachel Adler deixou de ser ortodoxa e se transformou em uma influente teóloga feminista. É hoje a rabina Rachel Adler. Da mesma forma que a sua perspectiva, também o nosso entendimento sobre micvaot, sobre pureza e impureza rituais, em particular no que tange à menstruação se transformaram profundamente.
Hoje, começamos uma nova série do podcast, Tradições Judaicas do Futuro, na qual vamos conversar sobre práticas judaicas revisitadas, recontextualizadas e que ganharam nova relevância para o futuro do judaísmo.

Wissenschaft des Judentums é o termo em alemão para o estudo científico do judaísmo, uma abordagem de investigação na qual o rigor acadêmico, não os dogmas religiosos, pauta o estudo de textos, história, tradições e contradições do judaísmo e da comunidade judaica.
Em uma tradição que valoriza tanto o estudo, não demorou para que a comunidade judaica abraçasse esta abordagem acadêmica, orgulhosa de que suas tradições e história fossem o foco desta linha de estudos. E não tardou também para que os conflitos aparecessem, para que os desprendimento demandado da abordagem científica se chocasse com interesses políticos comunitários.
Qual o estado atual dos estudos judaicos acadêmicos no Brasil e como vai a parceria entre os principais centros de estudo do assunto no país e as instituições comunitárias? Este é o tema deste episódio.

Sua personalidade é emblemática como exemplo da importância dos movimentos juvenis para a cultura e existência judaica tal como ela é hoje.
E sua frase demonstra a relevância desses movimentos para uma educação judaica que tenha como premissa a ação por um mundo mais justo. Uma educação que não baixe sua cabeça frente a injustiças e que seja transformadora.

Há mais de cem anos, as escolas judaicas ocupam um lugar de destaque no cenário da educação judaica no Brasil. Longe do seu apogeu em número de alunos há décadas atrás, hoje as escolas judaicas se questionam sua razão de ser: seriam escolas como todas as outras com foco na comunidade judaica ou seriam escolas únicas, nas quais a cultura judaica tem papel central? Frente a famílias cada vez mais exigentes, com demandas conflitantes entre si, e fortes pressões orçamentárias, qual o papel das escolas judaicas no Judaísmo do Futuro? Este é o tema que exploraremos neste episódio.

Prezado Professor, sou sobrevivente de um campo de concentração. Meus olhos viram o que nenhum homem deveria ver. Câmaras de gás construídas por engenheiros formados. Crianças envenenadas por médicos diplomados. Recém-nascidos mortos por enfermeiras treinadas. Mulheres e bebês fuzilados e queimados por graduados de colégios e universidades. Assim tenho minhas suspeitas sobre a Educação. Meu pedido é: ajude seus alunos a tornarem-se humanos. Seus esforços nunca deverão produzir monstros treinados ou psicopatas hábeis. Ler, escrever e saber aritmética só são importantes se fizerem nossas crianças mais humanas. (Texto encontrado após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, num campo de concentração nazista.)
Nesse mês relembramos, dia 7 de Abril, os judeus mortos no Holocausto, durante o Iom haShoá. Em 19 de abril nos lembramos do Levante do Gueto de Varsóvia, que teve início nesta data, em 1943.
Tão importante quanto relembrar, é aprender. Para que nunca mais uma barbárie assim aconteça. Mas também para saber reconhecer discursos e políticas que possuem bases similares no presente. E, assim, combatê-las. O que aconteceu nos marcou como judeus que somos. Mas seu ensino pode ajudar a nos transformar nos judeus que queremos ser. Hoje essa será nossa discussão.
