59. recovery as a return to self w/ lana lancaster

Listen Later

What if recovery isn’t about forcing yourself into someone else’s mold, but finding the path that actually fits you?

In today’s episode, I’m joined by Lana Lancaster, a passionate recovery advocate connected with the Auraria Recovery Community. ARC is an all-paths recovery space rooted in harm reduction, community support, and meeting people where they are. Lana brings both lived experience and deep compassion to the conversation, offering an honest perspective on what healing can look like when one-size-fits-all approaches fall short.

We get real about the complexity of healing, sobriety, and what happens when the spaces that are supposed to help you can also leave parts of you unseen. We talk about our experiences with Alcoholics Anonymous. The wisdom that supported us, the sayings that still guide us, and the parts that made us question whether one path can truly serve everyone.

We explore how everything can affect recovery: trauma, mental health, relationships, self-worth, nervous system patterns, and the inner critical voice many of us carry. Sometimes the first step is simply stopping the behavior that harms us. But healing often asks for more than abstinence... it asks for honesty, openness, willingness, and learning how to receive love and support until we can offer it to ourselves.

Lana shares how after eight years in AA, she still felt like something was missing. Like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. That missing piece led her toward a broader understanding of recovery: one that includes childhood trauma, identity, self-compassion, and the courage to get uncomfortable enough to seek new resources.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your healing has to look different than what you’ve been told, this conversation is for you.

Conversations like this one are exactly why this podcast exists. Angels Anonymous was born from the belief that recovery deserves more honesty, more nuance, more compassion, and more room for individuality than many of us were offered. It’s an alternative, a rebellion, and a reminder that there are infinite ways to come home to yourself.
