What languages should my character take in D&D? What are the rarest languages?

In some campaigns, language is seen as a bit of an afterthought while in other campaigns it is going to play a major part. There is one unifying language that is known by all but the most isolated of communities (or certain monster groups who refuse to civilize) known appropriately enough as "Common."

The most, well, common of all the common languages, this is almost always seen as the main language of the humans and one that is known in some form by all civilized races live Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, Dragonborn, Tabaxi, and most others. It is the unified way to allow the very necessary practical skill of allowing civilizations to communicate with one another.
