New Zealanders will have access to a 5G data service in two years.

That's the call from Spark, as it trials the faster connectivity in Wellington.

It's expected the service is needed for technology such as driverless vehicles.

Spark CEO Simon Moutter told Mike Hosking the trial involves checking 5G capability in and around an urban environment.

"We have a special vehicle which is testing the performance of a 5G signal in the two spectral bands that 5G uses. These are much higher frequency's compared to cellular networks we use today."
