Jane describes her first day at Lowood school with so much detail that Charlene and Mike are reminded of their emotions when going to a new school.  Mike being a military brat means he experienced going to a new school many more times than Charlene (and Jane).  We are also introduced to the wonderful Miss Temple and an as yet unnamed young girl reading alone.
