Edafe Okporo had to flee his native Nigeria after being beaten and hospitalized for his work as an LGBTQ+ activist, only to find himself behind bars in the US. He had to spend six months in the detention center, fighting for his asylum case. Today, he is helping other refugees avoid being locked up and is running a shelter for refugees in New York.
