Often conflated with spiritual health, mental health tends to be ignored in the church. Language in the church surrounding mental health often over-spiritualizes the actual problem, leaving many untreated and with a superficial faith. Common statements heard in the church include, 'choose a heart of joy,' 'pray without ceasing,' 'the joy is in the Lord,' God never gives you more than you can handle,' 'be anxious for nothing,' and 'i can do all things.' These are all problematic when used regarding mental health. Alyssa & Sarah share their experiences with mental health in the church and ways it could be improved upon.
