Disney's Demons

6. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

Listen Later

In this episode, I am joined by Saxon Bishop as we examine the last of Disney's "package films", a genre brought about by necessity as opposed to creativity. We compare the stories of two unusual characters, and discuss the unifying theme of societal expectation, and the punishment for not conforming to such. This is largely embodied by Mr. Toad breaking a lot of shit and Ichabod Crane prioritizing a ladies assets over her "assets".

The individual films themselves explore additional concepts, such as Mr. Toad's "mania" and societies treatment of such. But the meat of this comes from the mythology of Sleepy Hollow and how this film blurs the lines between myth and reality even further than in previous iterations, while building up to a fairly spectacular climax. (Although, to the credit of Mr. Toad, his story does have a cockney horse called Cyril Proudbottom and not enough people talk about that.)

Whether you believe any of this or not, the important thing to remember is: We are reading way too much into this.
