TRAVELLING

We all love going on an adventure!

Growing up, we often visited my grandparents in Johannesburg once a year. A 15 hour drive… it felt more like 15 days! My mum would pack lots of food like hard boiled eggs, tuna sandwiches, beef jerky (or biltong as we call it!) and the classic flask of coffee.

What I remember most (despite the bickering between siblings and eagerness to set off!) was how my father prayed for traveling mercies prior to our departure. Someone always forgot something. A toothbrush, a hat, deodorant… but somehow, we never forgot to pray before we left.

The Jews living in the ancient world had a similar custom. Only, they read Psalm 121 before setting off on an arduous journey to visit Jerusalem or some other village. This week, we explore this familiar piece of poetry and discover how it might help us journey well into the unknown.
