60th anniversary of Baton Rouge Swim-In

Original Air Date: 7/2/23 - For the month of July, Baton Rouge Gallery is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Baton Rouge Swim-In, when more than three dozen Black activists approached the segregated City Park Pool to protest Jim Crow-era policies that prevented them from enjoying a pool their tax dollars helped construct. Prevented by law enforcement from entering the pool, the resulting court decisions calling for the pool’s integration led to its being fenced off and forever closed. Gallery CEO Jason Andreasen and artist member Malika Favorite join host Pam Bordelon to talk about this historic collaborative project between the gallery, which is housed in the former pool house, BREC and Dialogue on Race Louisiana.
