61- Challenging the Narrative with George Wallace

Listen Later

Anyone familiar with the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s will be familiar with George Wallace. He’s the archetypal villain of the movement and with good reason. As the Governor of Alabama his famous defending the status quo would often be quoted. “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever!” But we know how it ends, Segregation would “end” legally and Wallace would be saved in the history books as the backwards man who was left behind by history. But today we look at how this is totally unfair. Plus, George’s story never ended there. He would go on to run for president multiple times, suffer an assassination attempt, and surprisingly be overwhelmingly voted back into office by black voters. What gives?
