Today we will look at the words “popular” and “majority”

The word “popular,” spelled P-O-P-U-L-A-R, is an adjective that means to be frequent or often relating to the public or a large number of people. If something is “popular,” it is widely accepted or seen. For example, a “popular brand” is a brand of store that many people like to go to or buy from. Anything “popular” is the opinion or liking of the majority or more than 50% of people in a group.

The next word today “majority,” spelled M-A-J-O-R-I-T-Y, is a noun. The word “majority” means a number of people in a group that is equal to more than 50% of the total number of people in the group. A “majority” is the greater part of a group in number. An example sentence is, “The board decided that a majority was needed to make a decision.” Another definition of the word “majority” is the age when full civil rights are given to a person in a nation. This means, for example, that in the U.S. the age of “majority” is 18 years old, that is when they get their own full civil rights.
