In today's episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join me and Jeri Bingham as we break down the challenges of being Black, a woman, and an introvert at work. Jeri is someone who understandably understands what "individuality" means and why it needs to be acknowledged by companies who want to draw out the best from their people. As you tune in, Jeri further explains the misconceptions regarding introverts, what employers need to be more aware of when examining talents, and her thoughts on coping mechanisms.
An Introverted Black Woman in Leadership
If you didn't grow up knowing Black folks or having Black friends, the likeness of you eventually learning about Black people from mainstream media and the news is high. What you'll discover will most probably be ingrained with stereotypes as well. Without first-hand experience with Black communities, television will tell you that Black people are loud, strong in personality, always witty, sassy, and aggressive — especially women. But that's not always the case.
Jeri is one where stereotypes don't fit. As Jeri started moving into managerial roles, it became more apparent that employers always want someone dynamic and social, even more, when you're Black. If otherwise, you face the chances of being seen as someone hard to understand,' or worse, 'hard to trust.'
