Tracking a nexus point in time, the Doctor meets Dr Evelyn Smythe, a history professor who is fading away as her timeline begins to unravel behind her. To stabilize the nexus and save Evelyn’s life, the Doctor must travel back to the time just before the rein of Elizabeth I to make sure that Evelyn’s ancestors are successfully born, while using all of his skills of diplomacy to navigate the theological politics of Queen Mary’s rein without losing his head (or anyone else’s) in the process.
