TRANSCRIPT:

Hello everyone, my name is Shivika, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all the new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today we will be looking at the words ‘reality’ and ‘reaction’

To start, the word reality is spelled as R-E-A-L-I-T-Y. This word is always used as a noun. The definition being the way the world exists and the way you perceive the world rather than an idea or notion of it. Something like actually living through life and learning how the world is and how you interact with it rather than just what you think the world is. For example, “The reality for Sarah was that her career path is much harsher than she thought it was going to be.” In this sentence, reality is conveying what her actual experience was like compared to her idea of what it was going to be. It can also mean, “The paperless school system is a reality now.” In this sentence reality is used to say something which was just an idea before but has turned into an everyday experience, something that was never put into practice before. Reality is basically the actual experience whether it be an idea which became an experience, a new job which was going differently than the person thought, and more.

The next word, reaction, is spelled as R-E-A-C-T-I-O-N. This word is also used as a noun. A reaction is an action which is basically a reply, or caused, that is based on a situation or event. For example, “Suzie’s reaction to her surprise engagement was heartwarming.” In this sentence you can infer that the reaction is an action or a series of actions that Suzie performed as a reply to her engagement. Reactions can be negative, positive, or neutral. A synonym for reaction can be retort.
