The Chofetz Chaim explained the specific trait that Hashem acts with is focusing on the positive as opposed to negative and when one speaks lashon hara essentially he's disproportionally viewing this person through the negative lens of this "story". If we define judging our fellow meritoriously as giving one the benefit of the doubt and assume that he's doing the correct action then its hard to compare it to Hashem's traits because he knows the reality. However if we define it as focusing on the good and not allowing the bad to distort the view of the person by overlooking it then we can understand how Hashem utilizes that trait as well and that is how we can emulate Him.
