Mental Health Uncovered

63. How to be Sick with Paul Matthew Harrison (Trauma Trials)

Listen Later

In this episode of Mental Podcast, Seth has a discussion with Paul Matthew Harrison. Paul is the author of Deconversions: My Journey Through Evangelical Christianity, God Told Me To Marry You, and All the Clever Words on Pages: Part I and II. Seth has previously interviewed Paul for a different show and brought him to discuss his experience involving chronic physical illness.

Paul describes how a diagnosis of Mono eventually led to a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as doctors were unable to find the cause. This fatigue was then followed by overwhelming pain and was subsequently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

Paul explores how his dual diagnosis impacts his day to day life and outlook on life. From relationships to planning events, Paul's entire world revolves on how much energy he can or can not exert. The mental health impact of these symptoms is then explored; from depression to isolation. Towards the end, Paul explores how he has learned to find meaning in the small things.
