On a dark early January evening of 1923, as folks were stuck in gridlock traffic, just trying to get home from work, the Allen Street Bridge in Kelso collapsed, killing 20 people. There's a strong chance even more people perished due to the high transient worker rate in Kelso at the time, who were helping to build the planned town of Longview.
People were immediately plunged into the murky and cold waters of the Cowlitz River, never to be seen again. In fact, the majority of bodies would never be recovered.
