I first met Denise Oliver when I was a solid B+ student in her English 099 class, but we went on to become peers, engage in a brief romantic interlude, and, years later, sit down in my home for a conversation — my first with an “ex” of any kind. We talk about writing, colonialism, why you can’t be an effective agent for change in the Black community with a white partner, and if that is fair or not. Then we get into relationships: her swirl year with a white boy, me getting caught up in some BDSM raceplay, how a Case history major grows up to date a truck driver, dating and mating within your caste and she rates our romantic sojourn, which makes me feel some type of way.
