In 1999, he moved to New York City to work on his graduate degree. He worked for five years in the housing projects of East Harlem at the James Weldon Johnson Counseling Center, which is well known for its rigorous training of young therapists. His work focused on working with children who had severe emotional needs through play therapy. Additionally, he worked with adults who were dealing with issues related to depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. He also worked on the front lines of 9/11 and with the Red Cross.
