Nautical Knowledge and Nonsense

7. Sea Shanties (but I am not going to sing a shanty in this episode!!)

Listen Later

In this episode I DO NOT sing any sea shanties NOR do I talk about the different types of sea shanties, their history, etc.  Rather, this episode is about my experience with and celebrating people coming together to share and sing songs (which include sea shanties of course).  I talk about the timelessness of singing together, my experience with it, how it's been lost in modern time but could be revived again, and how getting a group singing together can lead to a lot of free beer!!

Mentioned in this episode:

  • Shantyman David Lovine: He has made excellent music and is worth looking up and supporting.
  • Book, "Astoria" by Peter Stark.  This book wonderfully fills in the historical-knowledge-gap of most Americans between the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Oregon Trail.  Definitely worth reading and knowing.  Has some absolutely epic stories with regards to nautical history!!
  •

Intro/Ending Music: Many thanks to Riggy Rackin for allowing the use of music from his Nauticas album. The intro and ending themes are the sailor song "A Roving", specifically track 1.  Learn more or order his music at www.riggy.com
