Nora Gedgaudas, best-selling author and nutritional consultant, joins us to chat about the “burning” question…. are you a sugar burner or a fat burner?
The human body is designed to operate on two different fuels that we have access to, to run our organs and run our brain. We're taught that glucose is somehow essential for running the body and brain and that we rely entirely on glucose in order to do that, but this overlooks a rather important second other source of fuel that we were actually meant to be depending on as our primary source of fuel and that’s fat, mainly in the form of fatty acids and ketones. The brain can run mostly on ketones and we can do without a dependence on blood sugar as our primary source. But if you rely on carbohydrates as your primary source of fuel, it's very challenging to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. They tend to be excessive or too low a lot of the time and regulating them properly is something a lot of people have a problem with and when you eat a diet that is excessively based in carbohydrates this has a tendency to cause your ability to manage those levels, it tends to create a disregulation.
Our metabolism is like a fire. Do you feed it with fast-burning sugars and carbs which act like “paper, kindling or lighter fluid” constantly needing to be topped up and often leading to those common diseases of western civilisation? Or do you fuel your body with slow-burning fats? Like throwing a “log” on the the fire
