7. Team Projects In and Outside of Class: Why They Matter For Career Success

Today’s guest is Dr. Buster Dunsmore. Dr. Dunsmore is an associate professor in Purdue’s Computer Science department and is in charge of the senior project for software engineering students. In 1980, he was selected as Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science, and then in 1998 he was nominated by Purdue for the Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professor of the Year. Also, fun fact, Dr. Dunsmore is the coauthor of the books Software Engineering Metrics and Models and Internet Resources for Tourism and Leisure. Today, Dr. Dunsmore is here to give us a faculty member’s perspective on something I think a lot of us haven’t spent much time thinking about or planning for. That’s right, we’re discussing team projects in and outside of the classroom. We’re talking about why employers are looking for students who can work successfully on a team, and how completing projects beyond your class work can mimic the world of industry that you are going into and stand out on a resume.
