#7 - The Detective

Listen Later

Today, you can barely throw a proverbial stone without hitting a media portrayal of a law enforcement officer. Whether it's a fictional portrayal on Law and Order or real people in Making a Murderer, detectives are everywhere. They are a cornerstone of the dramatic experience, both real and imagined. There's something intriguing about the character: intensely driven, single-minded, passionate, aggressive, tormented, perhaps willing to cut corners to collar the perpetrator and save the day. But what is it like to be a real detective, when there are no cameras around to document? What is the job? What are its intricacies, complexities, and common misunderstandings to people like you and me. With a little help from former Homicide and Sex Crimes Detective Vance Voyles, we're going to find out together. We'll also find out how I hold up under an interrogation for an imaginary crime I definitely did not commit.
