…or White People Are Not Going to Change Until It Benefits Them.
“I think, one of the struggles that I’ve had to overcome is just learning to shut up and listen” - Kathleen
White liberals openly express how horrible racial injustice and racial inequality are for society yet, in the same breath, are unable to acknowledge how rampant systemic racism is. These same white liberals also like to “remind” others that it isn’t politically optimal to embrace radical policy change as it relates to racism. This is the paradox of white liberalism.
Today we talk with two individuals who help us distinguish the difference between white liberals and white allies. Kathleen Olen - she/her/hers- (@_wanderwhere_) is a Manager of Learning and Organization Development for a major CPG company. She’s also an executive coach specializing in all things Emotional Intelligence. Zack Ritter- he/him/his- (IG: @zack_ritter_20) is an Associate Dean of Students at California State University-Dominguez Hills. His passion is teaching history, politics, race, class and gender and how these relate to and can inform public policy and societal change. He is also an adjunct professor at UCLA and Cal State Dominguez Hills as well as a Diversity Consultant.
