70 years since Sophiatown residents were forcefully removed

Tomorrow (Saturday) the Dr AB Xuma Museum will be opening the Don Mattera exhibition and also the 70th commemoration of the Sophiatown forced removals that took
place in 1955. The exhibition which is a collaboration between the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation, Dr AB Xuma Museum, Wits History Workshop and Heritage Nexus aims to celebrate the life and works of Don Mattera. There will also be a march on Sunday
the 9th of February to mark the first day of the removals when 2-thousand apartheid police officers who were armed arrived early in the morning to remove the community of about 60-thousand people. We use this opportunity to reflect on the life of Mattera
and also remembering Sophiatown
