Hey! How are ya, Latonya?
Pretty good! And you?
Iâm okeydokey!
Thatâs one way that we exchange greetings in English.Â
How many ways do you think people say âhelloâ in English?
According to Berlitz â a language learning organization: 107 !
Today letâs talk about some of the common and some of the interesting ways we greet each other in English and how we can respond to those greetings. What do you think?
Letâs start with some of the most common formal ways to greet someone.
These are the totally safe greetings. You can use them with anybody â your boss and your best friend:
âTime of the dayâ greetings are always very polite.
Good morning/ afternoon/ evening.
Saying âHelloâ of course is always safe and polite too.Â
You can respond with the same greeting, and add âto you tooâ
Good evening!
Good evening to you too! or âSame to you.â
Now letâs talk about some informal ways to greet someone.
You would not usually greet your doctor or your boss with these greetings.
âHi!â and âHey!â are the most common. You can respond with the same greeting, or you can say âWhatâs new? â or âWhatâs up?âÂ
Sometimes âWhatâs up?â will sound like âWussupâ
If someone greets you with âWhatâs up?â or âWassup?â, you can say âNothinâ much. How about you?âÂ
âHow about you?â can sound like âHow âbout youâ?
People can also greet each other by saying âHowâs it goingâ or âHowâs it goinâ?â
Some responses can be âItâs going OKâ or â(I) canât complain.â
Instead of responding with âOKâ, you can say âOkeydokeyâ
Yes âOkeydokeyâ can be used informally instead of âOKâ any time you want to agree.Â
âLetâs go for a walk.â
 âOkeydokey!â
If someone says âHowâs it goinâ? and it isnât a great day for you, you can say âIâve had better days.â
An interesting informal greeting is âHowdy!â Â
âHowdyâ is what you often hear cowboys saying in western movies.
âHowdy pardner! (partner)â
You will hear people greeting each other saying âhowdyâ even if they arenât a cowboy â or should we say âcow personâ?
Another greeting you will hear that may sound a little strange is âWhatâs up, buttercup?â
âButtercupâ?Â
Well, a buttercup is a little yellow flower. We sometimes us âbuttercupâ as a term of endearment â like âsweetieâ or âdearâ. âYouâre my little buttercup!â
We can greet someone with âWhatâs up, buttercup?â just to be fun or playful.
So, we can greet someone with âWhatâs up buttercup ?â even if they arenât your sweetie?Â
Correct, but you should be pretty friendly with them. They can respond with âNothin, much.â Or âDoing fine!â
How about âDoing fine, Clementine.âÂ
Well, thatâs fun! Clementine is a sort of old-fashioned womanâs name.
âold fashionedâ?
Something that is old-fashioned is something from the past that is no longer popular.Â
Listen for some of these greetings in our short conversations as we greet each other.
 Good morning! Same to you!
Whatâs up, Latonya? Nothin much. How about you?
Whatâs goinâ on? Not much. And you?
Howdy! Hey!Â
Howâs it goin', Latonya? Okeydokey. How about you?
Itâs goinâ OK. Thanks for asking.
Hey _________, wussup? Nothinâ. You? Canât complain.
Whatâs up buttercup? Iâm doing fine, Clementine.
How are you, today, dear listener? We hope youâre okeydokey!
