Heart Snuggles

72: Planned Obsolescence and Greenwashing w/ Marine Conservationist Carissa Cabrera

Listen Later

Carissa Cabrera is a marine conservationist, educator, creative, + writer. We discuss planned obsolescence which is when a consumer good is designed to become unusable or irrelevant. How screens help non-confrontational people talk. The confusion and misinterpretation of messaging online. How technology has evolved and becomes less reliable and durable. We are set up to be replacing things and how capitalism wants you to continue to buy more things. The apple recycling program is actually greenwashing. To be more sustainable start getting refurbished technology, buy rechargeable batteries, and use more solar power. When e-waste sits in a landfill it seeps into our ground and contaminates our water. How to be aware of greenwashing which is when a company says they're doing something great for the environment, but you look into it and they aren't actually being sustainable. She says the best way to check if a company is being honest is by looking at certifications like fair trade and b-corp. We chat about how sad it is that companies make it hard for us to tell if they are being ethical. Recycling batteries to proper facilities and not just throw them away.
