72. Where Can Unschooling Teens Find Friends?

Listen Later

One of the biggest fears parents have about unschooling is this: "Will my child find friends?"

In this episode, we talk with Zoe, an unschooling teenager, and Christian, a long-time staff member at Not Back to School Camp, about what happens when young people have the chance to build genuine community outside the school system.

Together we explore why connection doesn't have to happen in classrooms, what makes Not Back to School Camp such a transformative experience, and how trust, autonomy and shared values create the conditions for deep friendships. We also talk about workshops, music, belonging, neurodivergence, identity, conflict, and what it feels like to find a place where you can truly be yourself.

Whether you're wondering how your child will make friends, looking for community as an unschooling family, or simply curious about what happens when young people are trusted, this conversation offers a hopeful glimpse into what's possible.

Some of the questions and ideas we explore include:

  • Where do unschooling teens find friends?
  • What is Not Back to School Camp?
  • Why is community so important for unschooling families?
  • How do young people build deep friendships outside school?
  • What makes a space feel safe enough to be yourself?
  • Why do so many teens describe camp as life-changing?
