73 – Autotune Controversy

Listen Later

Musicians/Non-musicians have many things to say about Autotune and Melodyne. In my experience a decent chunk of these people don’t fully understand what these tools can and cant do. Can they make a bad singer good? No.Can they fix minor tuning issues of both good and bad singers? Yes.Do even the most legendary vocal performances have slight tuning “issues”? Yes, but that’s not a bad thing. Does it save you having to do a million takes of a song to get a vocal that is competitive (pro sounding)? Yes.Can you do drastic changes to a singers pitch ? Not if you want it to sound natural or transparent. Is it always the right choice? Absolutely not.

In this episode we cover:

* What Autotune does vs. what Melodyne does.* Our thoughts on Autotuning in general. (Why do people get so fired up) * The old school way of “Autotuning” vocals.* Why listeners ears now expect to hear “tuned” vocals.* How a professional vocal is recorded with multiple takes, edited and tuned.* Some situations where autotuning might not be the right move. (Music Styles/Aesthetic Choice)
