Conversation For Adults

74. Derek Hess: Growing Up an Atomic Punk, Creating Art That Outlives You, Reckoning with Alcoholism, The Best Drugs, and a Captain America Art Heist

Listen Later

Derek Hess is a self-described “superhero and overrated artist” and a mental health advocate. His work has been featured on album covers, installations in the Louvre, human skin, comic books, and the walls of Jimi Izrael’s home. I kick things off with an apology, then we get into his Atomic Punk days: dysfunctional underage drinking communities, the best drugs for a 10-year bender, why his first time dropping acid was the best day of high school he ever had, and sharing his struggles with alcoholism and bipolar disorder in a documentary. Then we shift to his lifelong history as an artist, how relationships factor into the art equation, creating shit that will outlive you, and the never-solved heist of his Captain America comic covers.
