There is a price to pay for disobedience, but there is also a price to pay for obedience to the Lord.  This doesn't seem fair, but the payoff is eternal.

The enemy requires your eternal damnation in trade for whatever he promises you.  The Lord requires your eternal salvatioin in trade for obedience to Him. 

With the enemy, the price is AFTER the promise.  With the Lord, the price is paid BEFORE the the promise.
